APAS Youth Leadership and Mentorship Program
Saskatchewan needs a new generation of farm leaders. APAS and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture are hosting the APAS Youth Leadership and Mentorship Program, beginning Fall 2017 to Summer 2018. The goal of the program is to help young producers gain valuable experience, take advantage of networking opportunities and develop the skills necessary to become a future industry leader.
Farm organization matters - farm and rural leaders are needed to take on crucial issues like
•billion dollar losses from grain handling tie-ups
•escalating land and input prices
•complex regulatory and policy issues
•the increasing investment required to enter farming
•maintaining rural communities and services
•leadership skills development
•identify and advance farm issues that matters to you
•improve your presentation skills
•learn to chair meetings, negotiate, and find solutions
•meet other young producers who share your concerns
•mentorship by experienced Saskatchewan farm leaders
•attend the APAS Annual General Meeting (November)
•attend the Canadian Federation of Agriculture AGM in Ottawa (February)
•talk with current and previous farm leaders and provincial ministers and federal leaders and ministers
Past Program Participants:
"I would encourage any young farmer to become part of the mentorship program. The mentors have a wealth of experience and knowledge to share if we are willing to listen. My mentor and I have established a friendship that will extend beyond the end of my participation in the program. " - Scott Owens, RM of Eldon #471. Mentee, 2016/2017.
"I would recommend the program because ag policy can be intimidating and the sooner our generation gets involved and learns how to navigate the ag policy world in the province and in our country, the greater chance we have at continuing to push producer rights and issues in the future as the torches get passed to us." Spencer Maxwell, RM of Moose Range #486. Mentee, 2015/2016.
